Be Ready for Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak with Redsn0w [Confirmed]

Finally MuslceNerd has confirmed through his twitter account that “Plan B” iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.6b7 for iPhone 3GS New Bootrom, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4 etc will be available to download and test on Christmas.

The developer has suggested that only those iPhone users who don’t rely on unlock should test this untethered jailbreak.

Initially Redsn0w 0.9.6b7 will be released for Mac users only and after positive feedback, Windows version of Redsn0w will also be made available for download.

As we have already told you in our previous post that “Plan B” untethered jailbreak requires SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 to work, so if you didn’t save the hashes for the said iOS version, don’t try this method.

Here the complete update from iPhone Dev Team:

Over the Christmas weekend we’ll be releasing a version of redsn0w that implements the “backup plan” to the 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak.  We’re seeking your help to test this redsn0w and find any bugs before we do a general release!

(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak!  Just use the latest public redsn0w.)

To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program.  We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).

Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes.  Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW!  (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)

If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section here for feedback.  Thanks very much for your help, and Happy Holidays!

Stay tuned to this site for latest updates as they happen.

PwnageTool Bundle to Jailbreak Apple TV 2G on iOS 4.2.1

Earlier today Apple released iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV 2nd Generation. While thhe restore-file name shows that this version of iOS for Apple TV2 is 4.2.1 but the Apple website is reporting it as iOS 4.1.1. I don’t know why Apple is creating this confusion and if you remember, the similar type of confusion was also created when iOS 4.2.1 was released for iPhone, iPad nad iPod Touch.

As we have told you that iOS 4.2.1 brings only some bug fixes related to resolution and download problems, but it is still jailbreakable with PwnageTool.

The jailbreak method is same as we have posted in our previous post. All you’ll have to do is to use this new PwnageTool bundle to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 instead of iOS 4.2 PwageTool Bundle.

And yes, iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak with Pwnagetool is also tethered. It means you have to connect your Apple TV 2G with PC and use Redsn0w or PwnageBundle to boot it.

How to Install Plex on Your New Apple TV [Video]

We've shown you how to convert your video for your Apple TV ahead of time and on the fly, but if you're still not satisfied and want to play practically any video format, you can jailbreak your device and install Plex.

This is not a hack for the faint of heart. It's not terribly difficult, as the above video illustrates, but it is error prone. Fortunately, the same fellows over at iPhoneBlogr have put together solutions for common errors should you run into any. That said, you should know that jailbreaking your Apple TV could— theoretically —cause it to be consumed by raging hellfire. We've all been there, right? No? So now you've been warned.

If you want to risk bricking your Apple TV (which, in reality, seems pretty unlikely) and are comfortable rooting around your device via SSH, here's the process to follow:

* Jailbreak your Apple TV, which you can do using PwnageTool or alternate methods.
* Download and install Plex Server on your Mac OS X laptop or desktop.
* Install the Plex Client on your Apple TV using these instructions.

Once your done you'll be able to stream videos to your Apple TV's new Plex client via the Plex server on your Mac OS X computer. It's a little buggy at the moment, but should improve with time. Hopefully this is a sign of great things to come on jailbroken Apple TV devices.

Inception App Augments Your Reality, Acoustically

The official tie-in iPhone app for this year’s mind-melting Christopher Nolan flick is every bit as surprising and nontraditional as the movie. Where other apps provide listless minigames, boring photo galleries and jargon-filled text, this one provides something of an experience.

Antid0te: A More Secure Jailbreak on the Horizon

Of the many reasons people don't jailbreak their iPhones (besides the most obvious: "I don't see the point"), is the concern that it will affect the security of their phone. That concern is not unfounded - jailbreakers are even encouraged to change the root password on their phone, for example, to thwart unwelcome attacks.

Security issues are present because the current jailbreaking methods, by their very nature, diminish certain protections Apple has put in place. However, there's a new jailbreaking process on the horizon aiming to change that. The tool will be called "antid0te" and its reveal is only days away.

According to a report by The Register, a security analyst by the name of Stefan Esser, of the German firm SektionEins, will introduce a new jailbreaking process that automatically introduces the protection of ASLR.

ASLR, short for Address Space Layout Randomization, is a security protection that randomizes the memory locations of where injected code is executed. ASLR is baked into Windows (Vista/7) and the new Windows Phone 7, security analyst Charlie Miller told The Register, and it's available in a more limited format in Mac OS X. However, on iOS, the operating system that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, it isn't present at all.

iPhone's current lack of ASLR allowed security researchers at this year's Pwn2Own hacking contest to break into a fully patched iPhone and hijack the entire SMS database, including deleted messages. The hack took just 20 seconds.

Esser will be presenting his new, more secure jailbreaking method at the Power of Community security conference on December 14th. He will also introduce a new tool called "antid0te" which will simplify the jailbreaking process for end users, much like the line of current jailbreaking tools (redsn0w, PwnageTool, limera1n, etc.) do now.

For details on the current jailbreak and how-to guide, click here.

Jailbreaking to Improve the Security of Your iPhone?

Could it be that the new jailbreaking process then, instead of making phones less secure, would actually improve their security protections? That's certainly what it sounds like: "With ASLR, an exploit mitigation is added that is not available in factory iPhones and makes exploitation more difficult," reads the session and speaker bio on the conference website. And it won't end there. "This is only the first step," the description reads, "more mitigations and a full reactivation of the codesigning protection are planed for the next months."
